So Great Sew Much for Charity!

Our sixth Sew Much for Charity was terrific! There were about 60 people in attendance. We again combined it with offering free fabric to the public. There were 9 tables piled high with free fabric, notions, crafts, ribbons and trim, and all sorts of odd stuff that folks sifted through. At the end of the day, there were only about 10 boxes left to take to Volunteers of America.

There were 7 needle arts groups who sew, knit, or crochet for charity. Their work is truly astounding! Such beautiful women sewing beautiful things for our community, and all over the world. In fact, one of the groups is going to Guatemala next week to teach women to sew. What amazing women! We are privileged to know them.

After we began combining the free fabric event with the Sew Much for Charity, we learned we needed a way to get folks to interact more with the charity sewing groups. So we had each guest get a sticker from each sewing charity, and put their name and contact information on the card. These cards went into a drawing for either 3 grocery totes made from pet food bags, or 3 packs of hand made greeting cards. The 2 winners were very happy with their gifts! Because the guests had to get the stickers from the charities, they also got a better first hand look at what the different groups do, and who they sew for. There was much better interaction between those coming for free fabric, and the sewing charities. Some groups even picked up a volunteer or two.

We also had a more intimate prayer time for the sewing charities, and an opportunity to get to know each other better. We exchanged contact information so that we can all help each other in our ministries, too. It was a fun and productive day -- we hope you can be with us when we have our next Sew Much for Charity on the 3rd Saturday in March 2011.
