News and Tid-Bits
Sewin' Sisters Sowing meets as follows: 1st Saturday of every month, we will cut out fabric. No sewing, just cutting. The 3rd Saturday of every month, we will sew, sew, sew!! New Hours are from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm on both the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month in my home.
Bunch of cutups! In June we had a marathon cutting session, with 6 of us cutting from 11:00 to 5:00, with only a short break for lunch. Even Stephen was pressed into work stuffing the personal care bags. Though we were all exhausted at the end of the day, the feeling of accomplishment and relief was worth the pain. Nearly everything we cut out has already been sewn up. Getting this stuff pre-cut with the goal of minimizing waste, sure makes the sewing go faster! And did we ever cut up! We got silly and giddy and laughed like crazy! It really was a fun and rewarding day. Thanks, sisters!
June '08 Total of pieces donated to the charities in the Greater Harrisburg Area SEW FAR: 3570. Can you believe that??!! Our entire total for 2006 was 252, and for 2007 we did 2500 pieces. How in the world can already be at 3570 pieces and we're barely into July?? What an amazing group of anointed, dedicated, and talented women! And by the way, if you take a median price of $4.00/yard for the 3570 pieces so far, that's a conservative estimate of $14,280.00 worth of soft goods donated to the Harrisburg area by Sewin' Sisters Sowing. Thank you to all of you who sew in my home, and to those who sew in their own homes, and to all of you who have donated fabric and materials. Thanks to you, we ARE making a difference in our community!
Lap Blankets for the elderly are going to be in huge demand this winter. After talking with many of our local charities, they are already concerned about the catastrophic effect the rise in prices will have on the ability of the elderly to heat their homes. ALL of our local charities say they will need lap blankets by the hundreds. We are beginning to sew up lap blankets now in anticipation of the tremendous need that will be here by October. Please put the word out in your churches, work place, civic clubs, gym, etc. that we NEED wool, corduroy, fleece, and flannel to make as many lap blankets as we can. If you'd like to make some at home, they need to be roughly 54" long, and no less than 45" wide. Please provide an extra bit of warmth by using a sheet or other fabric sandwiched in between the front and back pieces, and either tie off or stitch the center of the blankets so that the pieces don't shift in the laundry. Check with me before you buy the "sandwich piece." I might have some sheets on hand.
Please copy and share the following press release with everybody you know, and plan to join us. It'll be fun!!!
Local Government, Local Business, and Local Charities Work Together to Provide Warmth for the Disadvantaged in the Greater Harrisburg Area Through Sewin' Sisters Sowing in the Sun Event
Hotel Hershey, Salvation Army, and Sewin' Sisters Sowing have collaborated to meet the need for 88 bedspreads for the Bethesda Mission; and Swatara Township has provided a beautiful area for us to demonstrate how working together will help keep folks warm this winter. Without anyone spending a dime, we will be able to provide warmth and beauty for the folks who may find themselves in the Bethesda Mission when it gets cold. This is an example of how our community must work together to provide for those who will suffer the cold this winter due to extreme heating costs. Representatives from the Bethesda Mission, Hershey Resorts and Entertainment Group, Salvation Army, and Sewin' Sisters Sowing will be available to answer questions about how you can help now, BEFORE it gets cold. The first 50 people will receive a free handmade gift. Come see how the Sewin' Sisters Sowing have adapted the ancient craft of needle arts for the 21st century. Sewin' Sisters Sowing will be making blankets for the Bethesda Mission, outside in the beautiful sidewalk area in front of the Swatara Township Municipal building located at 599 Eisenhower Blvd. on Saturday, August 16 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. There is no rain date. For more information, email Marcellene Currens, Founder, Sewin' Sisters Sowing, macurrens@netzero.net
